Current Position and Title:
Since 1990, Alina has been a researcher in the Division of Animal Biotechnology, which falls under the Agribusiness Research subdivision of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB). She is presently an Assistant Researcher at the Institution, and this year has begun to manage the Animal Health group. She is a member of the Scientific Council of CIGB.
Education and Past Positions:
B.Sc. 1990. Degree in Biochemistry, Biology Faculty of the University of Havana, Cuba
Ph.D. (in progress). Doctorate in Biological Sciences, University of Havana, Cuba. The research for her doctoral thesis is being performed at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Havana, Cuba.
Principal Supervisor: Mario Pablo Estrada, Ph.D.
Since her graduation, Alina has conducted her investigations in the agribusiness area of biotechnology. She has worked on transgenesis in mammals and aquatic species. Since 1998, she has worked on the manipulation of growth of aquatic organisms and in basic research on growth regulation in fish and crustaceans and the impact of growth regulation on the immune system of fish. Her current research is directed at the study of growth hormone receptors in aquatic species.
Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards:
Alina and her group have been recognized on several occasions by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for their research achievements. In 2007, Alina was recognized by The Academy of Sciences of Cuba (http://www.academiaciencias.cu/index.asp) for her contributions to the work: Neuropeptides that stimulate the growth and innate immune system of fish.
Obtained an ICGEB ( International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology) of Trieste scholarship for 2 years (1995-1998) for research with Professor Roberto Di Lauro, “Anton Dohrn” Stazione Zoologica, Napoli
Obtained an EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) scholarship for 3 months (1997) for research with Prof. Hans Shöeler, EMBL, Heidelberg , Germany .
Was nominated by Cuba to participate in meetings on Aquaculture organized by the FAO (2002) and in meetings of GMO Experts, also organized by the FAO (2003).
Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
Alina enjoys passing time with her family. She has been happily married with Nelson for 10 years. She has two daughters, 9 and 4 years old, who take up almost all of her free time. She loves to read universal literature and to go to movies, but has very little time to do these. She enjoys visiting new places inside her country and abroad.
